Subject: ICM98-CL21: Check your mailing address
for the Second Announcement
Dear colleague:
Almost half a year ago we have started sending out the ICM'98 First
Announcement calling for the attention of mathematicians from all
over the world. Roughly 30,000 copies have been mailed. We are
grateful to many mathematical societies, mathematics departments,
scientific institutions, and individuals for their help with the
distribution. Now, with little more than half a year to go for the
Opening Ceremony of ICM'98, it is time to enter the next stage in
the preparation of the Congress.
The Second Announcement, the document giving concise information on
all important aspects of the Congress, is on the verge of completion.
It will be printed in early January. To date, almost 4500 persons
from almost 120 countries have preregistered for ICM'98 and requested
the Second Announcement. Congress organizers have told us to expect
that half of the preregistered people will actually attend the
meeting. Thus, we still hope to reach more mathematicians and ask
for your help in distributing information about ICM'98, e.g., by
mailing this message to your fiends and colleagues.
We consider the probability high that a significant fraction of the
collected addresses needs correction. In order to ensure that your
printed copy of the Second Announcement will reach you (by ordinary
mail) we would like to ask you to check your data once more.
For this purpose we have set up a page
"List of Requests for the Second Announcement".
Just click on this phrase on the ICM'98 WWW server at
http://elib.zib.de/ICM98
and you will find an alphabetical list of the names of all persons
having requested the Second Announcement. To check an address, apply
the scroll bars on the border of the inner window untill your name
shows, click on it (it should turn black), and hit the (? Search)
button to the right of the selection window. A new window will come up
displaying name and address of the seleceted person; special characters
in names and address will appear in TeX or LaTeX format.
PLEASE CHECK YOUR OWN ENTRY!
If your data is correct, everything is fine, please do NOT react.
If, on the other hand, you have to adjust your data, simply post a new
request form giving ALL the data as you would like it to be. You will
find a request form appended at the end of this message. Please follow
instructions on this form closely.
As a special feature of the list, a second smaller window is provided
below the list of names. It displays all the countries that are
represented in the list. Furthermore it shows the number of prospective
participants from each country in parenthesis. Selecting a country from
this list will bring up the corresponding sublist of persons.
If, by experimenting with this feature, you happen to examine your
country and if you are thereby left with the impression that the number
of participants from your country could be higher, we are ready to
help you increase it. Send us the addresses of mathematicians possibly
interested in ICM'98 (and we will mail the Second Announcement to them),
or ask your colleagues directly to preregister as indicated below.
PLEASE MAKE SURE TO CHECK AND CORRECT YOUR DATA BY JANUARY 9, 1998.
