Abstract
The spectral presheaf, introduced by Chris Isham and Jeremy Butterfield, is a central object in the so-called topos approach to quantum theory. Physically, it serves as an analogue of the state space of a classical system. Mathematically, it is a locale (in a topos of presheaves or sheaves) associated with a given C*- or von Neumann algebra that has many properties of a spectrum of the algebra. We will show some first steps towards a generalisation of Gel'fand duality to arbitrary noncommutative C*- and von Neumann algebras, and a novel representation of states of a von Neumann algebra as probability measures on the spectral presheaf.
