TANIGUCHI SYMPOSIA

On Taniguchi Symposia

List of Taniguchi Symposia with titles of Proceedings

Shingo Murakami

The late Mr. Toyosaburo Taniguchi (1901-1994) established the Taniguchi Foundation in 1929 with his personal funds and aimed at promoting research in the basic science in Japan. After the world war II the Taniguchi Foundation has focused its activity on supporting mathematical meetings in Japan. Until 1972 fifty-two domestic Taniguchi seminars and symposia were held, favoring about seven hundred and fifty mathematicians. In 1974, Mr. Taniguchi started to support Taniguchi international symposia on Mathematics.

In 1976, Mr. Taniguchi contributed a huge amount of his personal funds to the extant Taniguchi Foundation, and initiated the new Foundation which promotes and sponsors small-scale international symposia in various fields of sciences. While his main desire had been to raise the level of scientific thought and research in Japan, at the same time Mr. Taniguchi dreamed of providing a forum where promising young scholars the world over could gather informally to exchange their thoughts, thereby contributing to mutual understanding, peace, and the future development of mankind.

The fourth Taniguchi international symposium held in 1977 is the first symposium sponsored by the new Taniguchi Foundation and was organized in accordance with Mr. Taniguchi's original concept. The Mathematics Divisions were headed by Prof. Yasuo Akizuki, an old friend of Mr. Taniguchi, until his death in 1984 and then have been coordinated by Prof. Kiyosi Ito and myself. The forty-one symposia listed below were held, and more than three hundred foreign mathematicians were invited to these Taniguchi Symposia.

The Taniguchi Foundation will cease to exist in 1999, an event that has been scheduled since its beginning. Mr. Taniguchi declared, "I would spend even the fundamental funds for the Foundation to continue its real activity. When all the money has been used up, the Foundation shall to exist."
