An Introduction to Error Correcting Codes

When a signal is send from a source to a receiver,
it is often disturbed by some noise on its way. Typical examples
are telephone communications over long distances, or storage devices
like compact discs. It is then desirable to encode the signal in
such a way, that the original message can be recovered from the
disturbed signal by the receiver. Coding theory is the study of
finding efficient methods for fulfilling these tasks. In this
lecture we will discuss some very basic properties of these codes
with an emphasis on methods coming from linear algebra.
