The concept of parallel transport was only developed after completion of the general theory and largely in response to it.
The only available geometrical interpretation of the Riemann tensor was in terms of the Gaussian curvature of
two-dimensional sections, which was of little help in relating the Riemann tensor to anything in gravitation theory. Its
interpretation in terms of geodesic deviation, so easily related to gravitational tidal forces, again lay in the
future.
