This lecture is an advertisement for John
Milnor's very popular book with the same title. It explains various
classical results from topology using the theory of differentiable
functions, in particular the Inverse Function Theorem and Sard's
Theorem on regular values.
We will cover only the first few pages of the book, which contain an elegant proof of Brouwer's Fixed Point Theorem: A continuous map from the closed unit n-dimensional ball to itself has a fixed point. Literature
